Tis the Season for Holiday Shipping

The holiday season is quickly approaching and for most of us it is a time for family, friends, holiday parties and a lot of shopping. Most would agree that the holiday season is one of the happiest times of the year.  For small business across the country, it is one of their busiest, most stressful and one that can make or break their year.

The boom of e-commerce has put shopping at the consumers fingertips and raised the bar when it comes to expectations. Consumers want their purchases faster and with accurate tracking updates. E-commerce sales during the 2018 holiday season was over $123 billion and it has no signs of slowing down as we go into 2019. As a small or medium size business, how can you make your holiday shipping season the most enjoyable?

  1. Take note of peak holiday shipping times – Peak shipping times typically fall from Dec 9th – December 23rd.  Carriers demand is high and hours can sometimes fluctuate.  If bad weather arises during this time, it can further strain the supply chain.  Plan in advance.
  2. Expect Delays – Cold weather and snow is unpredictable and common during this time.  Know that delays can and will happen and have a plan in place in the event a storm is on the horizon.
  1. Don’t sacrifice service for cost – Sometimes the cheapest option is not always the best.  Failure to meet expectations can have a lasting impression.  Choose a provider that has a proven track record.
  2. Communicate – Make it clear of your expectations, hours, cut of times ect.  The more information you can provide to your vendors, the better success you will have.
  3. Understand cut off dates – Parcel and Postal service publish cut off dates for next day, 3-day, 5-day etc. shipping.  Know what they are and don’t wait until the last minute.

Holiday shipping can certainly be stressful if the correct precautions are not taken. Taking the time to plan for the worst and have redundancy options will be well worth the time. Take the time to choose your right provider that you trust. They are an extension of your company and should be someone that is aligned with similar goals of your own.
