Southern California has always been the number one player when it comes to volumes in and out of the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. However, there might be an up and coming East Coast Port that might be able to rival their West Coast counterparts in the future. This would be the Port of Savannah which is located in Southern Georgia. Over the past few years, land around the Port of Savannah has been developed to help accommodate this forecasted explosion of freight coming in. Companies have invested in the land around the port (20,000+ acres)to prepare for the volume increases.
The Georgia Port Authority is currently planning on constructing a new container port that should be finished by 2026. In the first half of 2020 the GPA plans on adding six more cranes to their arsenal to help increase container volume getting off loaded. CSX and Norfolk southern also plan on having rail routes heading to Chicago out of the GPA. One more piece that makes Savannah and attractive option is the access.
You might wonder why the Savannah Port has seen an increase in volume. There are a few reasons across the board as to why this is happening. With the current“trade wars” and tariffs, manufacturers are starting to leave China and head to other countries in the South Pacific. With these companies switching locations, they are also changing their path to the East Coast. Now they prefer to go through the Suez Canal over the more expensive Panama Canal.
“Georgia’s deepwater ports and inland barge terminals support more than 439,000 jobs throughout the state annually and contribute $25 billion in income, $106 billion in revenue and $2.9 billion in state and local taxes to Georgia’s economy. The Port of Savannah handled 8.5 percent of U.S. containerized cargo volume and 10 percent of all U.S.containerized exports in 2017” – Statement from the Georgia Port Authority media outlet.
