Minutes of the Regular Meeting

June 26, 2001

The regular June meeting of the Mercer County Amateur Radio Club was called to order on June 26, 2001 at 7:34 PM by President Jerry Parkany, N8PY.  There were 16 members present and one guest:  Doug Butchy, W3SAX, who is a General class licensee from Mercer in his 5th year as a Music Ed. major at YSU.  Major Dalessandro, K3IGO, mentioned that the pictured did not look good in the Carrier Wave because the printing was too dark.  A motion by Dennis Gregory, WM3H, and seconded by Tom Galloway, K3TG, to accept the May 2001 minutes passed.

Treasurer's Report:  Jerry Viele, W8JV, moved to accept the May treasurer's report as printed in the Carrier Wave. Bob Drexler, WA3ZOE, seconded the motion.  The motion carried.

EMA:  Dennis Gregory, WM3H, said that he is going to the EMA to sort through a box of connectors that they have there.
Dave McGargee, N3CM, said Jim Thompson, EMA Director, should be asked if there are still 2 sets of 40' military tower at
the County Home barn.

TVI/RFI:  Jerry Parkany, N8PY, reports that he has had a very bad RF problem on the repeater frequency at his home QTH due to some sort of paging tones.  This seems to only occur when he is on his directional antenna.  The source of this RF is
not known.

VE Session:  Dennis Gregory, WM3H, reported that Shawn Glasser, KC8PRI, upgraded to General class.  Another candidate did not pass.  There was one in attendance that only had to have a name correction done.  The next VE session in Mercer will be on Saturday, August 18th at the EMA Building.  Registration is at 9 AM.  Testing is at 10 AM.

Membership:  Nothing to report.

Net/Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner/Good Hams:  No report was made about the check-ins on last week's 10m Net (Thurs. at 8:30 PM on 28.450 MHz).  Eleven (11) checked-in to last week's Emergency Communications Net (Thurs. at 9 PM).  There were 6 to 8 who attended the lunch at Wendy's on Rt. 18 at 11:30 AM last Wednesday. There were 6 or 7 who attended the Saturday breakfast at Burger King on E. State St. at 9 AM.  No one attended the Friday night dinner at the Cookery on Rt. 18 at 8 PM.

OLD BUSINESS:  Field Day:  Jerry Parkany, N8PY, thanked Tom Galloway, K3TG, for his work as FD Chair this year.  A round of applause was given.  A few of the others were mentioned and thanked:  Roy Drake, W3RTY, for letting us use his 6m beam; Doug Noderer, W3FYV, for letting us use his 2m beam, even though it did not get on the air.  Tim Jellison, W3YQ, made it to FD all the way from Alaska!  Tim Duffy, K3LR, was in town from Oklahoma City and provided much technical support.  Linda Yankovich, N3XZA, enjoyed working 6m, 10m, and 40m.  County Commissioner Olivia Lazor made a visit allowing the Club to earn extra points for FD.  Section Manager John Rodgers, N3MSE, made a visit as well.  Approximately 26 Club members attended FD.  Thanks was given to Chuck Thomas, KB3DAK, for chairing the Food Committee. He had a nice trailor set-up.  Both phone and CW tents were in operation.  An IC-765 was used for CW.  There were both 10m and 80m dipoles strung as well as a G5RV.  Members were intrigued with PSK-31.  Robbie Williams, KB3EFK, had a "blast" on this mode, making about 30 contacts.  Mike Varga, NR3C, worked Athens, Greece on PSK-31.  It was mentioned that the repeater should have been monitored on a full-time basis. Dave McGargee, N3CM, asked about whether the baffles are opened automatically or manually on the generator.  Also, it was noted that the new person running Buhl Park is a licensed, inactive ham.

Repeater:  The items and work needed for repeater repairs were mentioned.  They include the antenna, coax, repeater repair
to the finals, as well as the donated labor.  Dave McGargee, N3CM, mentioned that the Repeater Committee might be able
to do field strength readings from various points in the county.  So far during the month of June, the repeater has been used for 40.5 hours.  However, each time it is keyed up it counts as a minimum of 1 minute.

Picnic:  The Club Picnic will be on the 4th Tuesday of July in place of the regular Club meeting (July 24th).  We will meet
at Shelter #4 in Buhl Park at 6 PM.  Chuck Thomas, KB3DAK, will provide the "chef duties."  The Club provides hamburgers,
hot dogs, and buns.  Members may bring a covered dish and are encouraged to bring their families.

NEW BUSINESS:  WAMCO:  This year WAMCO will take place in August.  The rules will be in the July Carrier Wave.
Patrick Baker, N3IDG, is the WAMCO Chairman this year.
